For this week's blog we thought we'd celebrate Red Bull's recent amazing Culture Clash event by having a little Folded Wing sound clash!
Read moreFirst hosted in London in 2010, the Red Bull Culture Clash has become a staple on the clubbing calendar. It's hosted everyone from Johnny Osbourne to Usher to Metalheadz. Culture Clash acts as a celebration of sound system culture and its ongoing influence on hip hop, dancehall and dance music. And the four crew battle, which took place last week at Earls Court in London, was a classic.
After pulling Trevor McDonald out of retirement for a news bulletin and dropping a dubplate from none other than Rihanna, it was Rebel Sound (made up of Sir David Rodigan, Shy FX and Chase & Status) who took the crown from last year's winners Boy Better Know.
So, for this week's blog we've decided to have the first ever Folded Wing sound clash! It wouldn't be a clash without a winner, so be sure to let us know who you think has picked the biggest track on Twitter - @foldedwinguk
Karen's Choice:
Buraka Som Sistema
Fabian - 'Prophecy' 12"
"'Prophecy' is a London sound boy roots reggae classic! And was an anthem for DJs like Lloyd Coxsone and Jah Shaka... but whoever mastered the 12" deserves some kind of sound system medal cos it has the BIGGEST, HEAVIEST bass line known to man (and woman). Until you've heard it on a big system you haven't really heard it." Ian's Choice:
Sister Nancy - 'Bam Bam'
"I've never taken part in a sound clash but used to DJ at a lot of reggae dances. Ansell Collins's 'Stalag 17' is one of the most popular riddims ever - hundreds of tracks use it, the best known is probably Tenor Saw's 'Ring the Alarm', but my favourite is Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam'. I had quite a few 'get out of trouble' tracks, but this one never failed."
Lucy's Choice:
Beyoncé - 'Drunk in Love' ft. Jay-Z
"In my humble opinion what helped win it for Rebel Sound (as well as Rodigan's amazing speeches) was their fearlessness in playing pop music! From the HUGE Rihanna dubplate (‘We Found Love’ re-versioned to say ”Rebel Sound killing BBK / Rebel Sound killing A$AP Mob”) to Kanye's Bound 2 ('I know you're tired of losing'), it was the big pop songs that got some of the biggest crowd reactions of the night. So who better to win a sound clash than a Jay & Bey personalised dubplate? I reckon Drunk In Love's lyrics could easily be changed to slay the opponents." Sandie's Choice
Bee Gees - 'Stayin' Alive' "I've gone for a 70s party classic that everyone knows and would not fail to sing and most definitely dance-a-long to!" Matt's Choice:
Fugees - 'Ready Or Not (DJ Zinc Jungle Remix)'
"DJ Zinc is someone who can do no wrong in my eyes... he's able to transcend through hip-hop to jungle to DnB and more recently house, seemlessly. He's got loads of tracks that I could have chosen but I've gone for a remix he's done of an absolute classic that wouldn't fail to get a crowd going!"
