Folded Wing's November Chart
22 November 2013, Posted in: Folded Wing Recommends

Believe it or not but it's Friday again and that means it's time for your favourite read of the day... our Folded Wing weekly blog.

For this month's Folded Wing chart, we're celebrating the latest addition to the Folded Wing family - Monki.

In case you haven't heard the news... from Sunday 2nd December, Folded Wing will take charge of production duties on Monki's show on BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra and we couldn't be more chuffed!

Monki is Radio 1 & 1Xtra’s newest talent and joined the network as one of the roster for the In New DJs We Trust strand, before being given her own slot earlier this year.

To celebrate, we raided the gigantic office music collection to pick out our favourite club tunes from the past year.

With Monki representing all corners of the club on her show, we'd like to think that our choices reflect that and we'd love to hear what you make of them, as well as hear what your favourite tunes of 2013, to date, are. Have a think and then drop us a tweet @FoldedWingUK.

Whilst you have a ponder, here's our choices...

Karen's Choice:

Breach Feat. Andreya Triana - 'Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)' (Ninja Tune)

"This track started life as Breach remix of my favourite singer in the UK & this new version smashed it... right onto the playlist at Radio 1 & everywhere. Whoever put Breach & Andreya together is a genius! I can't wait to hear Breach's DJ Kicks album".

Andrea's Choice...

Ms Dynamite & Shy FX - 'Cloud 9' (Digital Soundboy)

"I loved Ms Dynamite when she first came out and it's good to hear her voice on a couple of new tracks this year. This one with Shy FX is my favourite of the bunch."

Lucy's Choice...

Rhye - 'Open' (WMNStudies Bootleg) (White Label)

"Rhye's 'Open' is typical of the Canadian/Danish duo's stripped down soul-inspired sound - hushed vocals, string samples, harp fills, the whole works. WMNSTUDIES handle the original track with utmost respect and care, increasing the BPM, transforming the orchestral parts into a thumping bassline and making it something you can't help but dance to. The looped 'I'm a fool' line is still heartbreaking though."

Jim's Choice...

Trevino - 'Backtracking' (Original Mix) (The Nothing Special)

"This actually came out in 2012 so I'm late! But I heard it for the first time this summer when i saw a video clip of DJ Harvey playing it at Lovebox. It's got a lovely old school acid feel with beautiful chord changes. Trevino is an alias of D&B don Marcus Intalex so big him up."

John's Choice...

Omar feat Caron Wheeler - 'Treat You' (Opolopo Remix) (Freestyle Records)

"A lot of house music leaves me cold these days, but this remix is awesome. The clonking bass line, shuffly beats and blippy sounds just work incredibly well with the vocals of these two legendary British singers."

Matt's Choice...

Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo feat. Janai - 'Signs' (White Label)

"Hannah Wants and Chris Lorenzo are a production duo from Birmingham who have been gaining much deserved hype this year and on the basis of tracks such as 'Signs', they're set to gain even more adoration in 2014. A wicked slice of blissed out Ibiza house that takes me back to the summer whenever I hear it! "

Pete's Choice...

Submotion Orchestra - 'Hard To Stay' (Circus Media)

"Probably one more for the end of the night, but I think this is wicked. We had these guys on The Selector a couple of month's back, they were really lovely and they gave us an exclusive play of this track, describing this as their big 80's style ballad!"

You can catch Monki's BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra show every Monday morning, 2 - 4am.
